OGDEN, Utah, July 26, 2024 – Bank of Utah's new summer internship program is making a big impact by packing both backpacks and invaluable experiences through service and learning. Next week, Bank of Utah interns will partner with Youth Impact to educate young participants about banking and saving money, followed by a volunteer project at Catholic Community Services to fill backpacks with school supplies for kids who would otherwise go without this school year.
Sterling May, Bank of Utah’s Talent and Acquisition Compensation Specialist, collaborated with Eileen Nicholas from Youth Impact to design this impactful service project. “Eileen has been incredible to work with,” May said. “She had so many great ideas, and we were able to put together something that will be great.”
On the morning of July 31, Bank of Utah's seven interns will meet with approximately 120 Youth Impact participants. They will conduct educational sessions on banking and the importance of saving, followed by a lunch provided by Youth Impact and some games. In the afternoon, they will head to Catholic Community Services to fill backpacks with new school supplies for students in need. Bank of Utah will provide water bottles for all participants.
This is the inaugural year for Bank of Utah’s summer internship program. The bank has hosted interns in the past, but this summer marked a dedicated effort to hire seven interns from universities across the state. President Branden Hansen aimed to establish a formal internship program to guide college students as they complete their education. May led this initiative, receiving 700 applications for the positions. Interns were selected from Southern Utah University, Utah State University, and Brigham Young University for the 12-week program, which will conclude in a couple of weeks.
The “Class of 2024” interns have been a group of successful college students who will return to their senior year of college with new skills and practical experience in various aspects of banking. May has enjoyed seeing the interns grow and contribute to Bank of Utah. This service project is a notable part of their contributions.
“This internship program has been a great experience for everyone involved,” Hansen said. “It is the start of a great new tradition at Bank of Utah, and to cap it off with a wonderful service project is a perfect way to send our interns back to college and into the world.”
